Whether you knocked out a tooth while playing sports or you have advanced periodontal disease, there are many reasons why you could end up dealing with tooth loss. Our Arlington, VA, dentist Dr. Bruce Hanley is here to tell you how dental implants might be able to help you and who could be a great candidate for this restorative dentistry procedure.

What are dental implants?

Implants are metal posts that are placed into the jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth’s root and to support an artificial tooth. Since the implant is placed into the jawbone it makes it a great foundation from which to support a replacement tooth or teeth.

How do they work?

A dental implant needs to be placed into the jawbone in order for them to be successful. Not only that but they also have to bond with tissue and bone. This is the most important component to a dental implant. Fortunately, the success rate for dental implants is extremely high.

Once the implant has fused together with the jawbone we will place an extender known as an abutment. This is attached to the top of the implant and is used to connect the implant (which you won’t be able to see) with your artificial tooth or teeth. Once the abutment is secured, the last step is to place the dental crown (if you need to replace only one missing tooth), a dental bridge (for several missing teeth) or full dentures (for all of your missing teeth).

Are they right for me?
